Located at the gateway of Hsinchu Railway Station and adjacent to Provincial Highway No. 1, the station forecourt and surrounding streets were historically dominated by vehicular traffic, resulting in limited pedestrian space and an unfriendly walking environment. As Hsinchu's historic urban core developed over time, its narrow streets and alleyways became increasingly inadequate for contemporary traffic and pedestrian demands.

Following the successful transformation of the station forecourt from a vehicle-oriented space into a pedestrian plaza, this project further expanded the vision of creating a more people-centered city. The redesign focused on improving the overall landscape, pedestrian circulation, and public realm surrounding the station, with the goal of enhancing connectivity between the front and rear station districts while strengthening the relationship between urban functions and cityscape.

Originally constructed more than a century ago on the eastern edge of Hsinchu's historic walled city, the railway station once stood outside the city gates along the central axis leading to Yingxi Gate (East Gate). As the city expanded, the station gradually became part of the urban center. Drawing inspiration from this historical context, the project places pedestrian experience at the core of the design, extending outward from the station to create a connected, accessible, and welcoming public environment.

Through improvements to streetscapes, public spaces, and pedestrian networks, the project provides residents and visitors with a safer, more comfortable, and more enjoyable urban experience while reinforcing the station's role as a key civic landmark and transportation hub.
