Xinxin Park is a 2.5-hectare public park located along Section 7 of Civic Boulevard and serves as a key project within Taipei’s Eastern Gateway Development Plan. As Taipei’s first large-scale wetland-themed park, it was designed to purify and recycle stormwater through a combination of constructed waterways, aquatic vegetation, and ecological landforms. The park not only provides valuable wetland habitat but also offers opportunities for recreation, environmental education, and close interaction with nature.

 

Design Concept: Hills, Forests, Waterways, and Wetlands

Originally a flat site, the park was reshaped to establish a diverse wetland ecosystem. Earthworks were used to create rolling landforms and woodland areas on the northeastern and southwestern edges, forming a landscape structure that supports ecological diversity and improves microclimatic conditions.

Between these elevated areas, a network of waterways and wetlands filters stormwater through natural processes involving clay soils, gravel beds, and aquatic plants. At the center of the park, a large retention pond serves both as a scenic focal point and a stormwater detention basin, helping regulate water levels, improve local climate conditions, and reduce flood risk.

 

Stormwater Recycling and Water Purification

A key innovation of the project is its integration with Taipei’s stormwater drainage system. Rainwater from nearby drainage infrastructure is diverted into the park, where it flows through a series of ecological filtration channels before entering the central pond. After natural purification, the water is gradually discharged back into the drainage network, demonstrating a sustainable urban water-cycle approach while enhancing water quality and supporting wetland ecology.

 

Planting Strategy

The planting design is guided by three principles:

Seasonal Interest – Evergreen, deciduous, and flowering trees provide changing colors and visual experiences throughout the year.

Local Adaptation – Native and climate-adapted species were selected to reflect the ecological character of Nangang and promote biodiversity.

Long-Term Landscape Quality – Tree species and planting arrangements were carefully planned according to their mature size and growth habits to ensure a cohesive and enduring landscape.

 

Nighttime Experience

The lighting design transforms Xinxin Park into a safe and inviting public space after dark while maintaining sensitivity to wildlife habitats.

  • Ecological Lighting – Low-glare fixtures minimize disturbance to both visitors and wildlife.
  • Pathway Lighting – Discreet ground-level lights provide clear pedestrian guidance while preserving the park’s tranquil atmosphere.
  • Accent Lighting – Adjustable spotlights highlight key trees and landscape features, creating visual interest without excessive illumination.
  • Safety Lighting – Warm-colored pathway lighting enhances visibility and comfort along circulation routes and waterfront edges.

Together, these elements create a contemporary urban wetland that combines ecological function, water management, recreation, and environmental education, establishing Xinxin Park as a model for sustainable landscape design in Taipei.
